NOT ALL MONSTERS HIDE IN THE DARK。

Archer’s Peak is in lockdown, as Erica Slaughter has lost control of the situation and news of the killings has spread outside the town。 But as the House of Slaughter arrives to clean up the situation by any means necessary, Erica will find that the true threat to those around her isn’t who - or what - she ever expected。 And the cost of saving the day may be too high for anyone to pay。。。

GLAAD Award-winning writer James Tynion IV (Batman, The Woods) and artist Werther Dell’Edera (Briggs Land) present the next chapter of the Eisner Award-nominated and critically-acclaimed series that reveals the monsters hiding in plain sight。

Vol3 surprised me by actually tying up most of the mythos teased-at in the first two volumes with a satisfying and well-paced finale。 Part of what left me feeling less interested after Vol2 was having supposedly finished 2 story arcs with 0 real endings but plenty of vague hints teased at。 It’s clear now those are really acts 1 and 2 of a larger arc, and I imagine it will read better in a longer format that includes all 15 issues at once。Of course, there’s still interesting story threads I’d enj Vol3 surprised me by actually tying up most of the mythos teased-at in the first two volumes with a satisfying and well-paced finale。 Part of what left me feeling less interested after Vol2 was having supposedly finished 2 story arcs with 0 real endings but plenty of vague hints teased at。 It’s clear now those are really acts 1 and 2 of a larger arc, and I imagine it will read better in a longer format that includes all 15 issues at once。Of course, there’s still interesting story threads I’d enjoy further exploring, now that I’ve seen proof that the series can pay them off。 Erica and James and the Order are more abstractly intriguing than emotionally compelling at the moment, but these issues at least twisted the dial closer to me actually caring about Erica and James。 The horrific action continues to be over pretty quick when it finally goes down, which can sometimes feel anticlimactic, but it always looks really great in Dell’Edera’s distinctive style。 。。。more

At last, we have an explanation as to why something is killing the children。 Having said that, I felt like the ending (it sure sounded like the ending of the series) was rushed。 New incredibly interesting characters were introduced, a horrible bargain made, and secret ways to communicate with the monsters were revealed and yet。。。。 the ending。 Tell me it isn't so。 At last, we have an explanation as to why something is killing the children。 Having said that, I felt like the ending (it sure sounded like the ending of the series) was rushed。 New incredibly interesting characters were introduced, a horrible bargain made, and secret ways to communicate with the monsters were revealed and yet。。。。 the ending。 Tell me it isn't so。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Ends with the boy and her on a bus leaving。 Tommy confessed to killing all the kids so the order would go away without killing people。

Closure。 Bloody closure。

Reading as single issues:#11 - still confused, but action is getting better (really wish they would quit with the double page layouts)#12 - ok, things may be starting to come together。。。and much gorier (love the shade of red they use for blood)#13 - more set up, some guy I don't remember dies#14 - some bloody action, ok。。。#15 - meh, ok ending。 I guess。 Kinda my feelings for whole series so far。3。5 stars, rounded up。 Again, extra points for kickass main character named Erica 🤣 Reading as single issues:#11 - still confused, but action is getting better (really wish they would quit with the double page layouts)#12 - ok, things may be starting to come together。。。and much gorier (love the shade of red they use for blood)#13 - more set up, some guy I don't remember dies#14 - some bloody action, ok。。。#15 - meh, ok ending。 I guess。 Kinda my feelings for whole series so far。3。5 stars, rounded up。 Again, extra points for kickass main character named Erica 🤣 。。。more

Compelling art, killer layouts (the action scenes in this volume are the best of the series by a long shot), interesting worldbuilding, and some flickers of sincerity make this a fast and easy read。 But it's hard to escape the feeling that the series teeters on being something much more than it is。I've started to think of this series the same way I think about a B-level monster movie, as in there's a lot of good genre-stuff to enjoy, but none of it really sticks。 For all of the heavy emotions Ty Compelling art, killer layouts (the action scenes in this volume are the best of the series by a long shot), interesting worldbuilding, and some flickers of sincerity make this a fast and easy read。 But it's hard to escape the feeling that the series teeters on being something much more than it is。I've started to think of this series the same way I think about a B-level monster movie, as in there's a lot of good genre-stuff to enjoy, but none of it really sticks。 For all of the heavy emotions Tynion plays with, the cast of characters never quite comes into focus, which takes the edge out of the (otherwise formidable) stakes。 I want to be invested in these characters, but I'm just。。。not。 I'm invested in the plot, for sure, and continue to be excited by the twisted world of invisible, nightmarish creatures and the shady cults of monster hunters who fight them。 But at the end of the day, the lack of tangible stakes leaves it feeling a bit forgettable。 The series obviously wants its characters to be the crux of the story, which is why it's disappointing that they're unable to live up to that desire。Werther Dell’Edera's art is the best it's been, though, and any qualms I had about it previously have mostly evaporated。 This is the best-looking volume, and I love how Muerto's colors work alongside Dell’Edera's moody, heavy artwork to make the darkness of the series (literal and otherwise) feel like it has weight。 There may not be a great deal of imagination in the layouts, at least compared to other prominent horror titles, but they're incredibly effective at conveying the motion of combat and the pressures of survival。The first three volumes of Something is Killing the Children would all get scores in the mid-to-high 3-star range, but since Goodreads doesn't let me do that, I'm going to continue to round up。 I may not be as excited by this series as I want to be, but it's a consistently exciting and unsettling title that I'm happy to keep reading。 。。。more

So we find what really is going on, most questions are answered, and everything gets solved。  It wasn't easy and it gets really bad there for a moment。  I think we get what we wanted, but at the same time I want more。  We found out what was killing the children, the threat was stopped, Erica was able to do what she needed to do, not the way she wanted, not without blood spilled, but it's mostly a win, the question is, what's next?I really, really hope we get to see more of this amazing world and So we find what really is going on, most questions are answered, and everything gets solved。  It wasn't easy and it gets really bad there for a moment。  I think we get what we wanted, but at the same time I want more。  We found out what was killing the children, the threat was stopped, Erica was able to do what she needed to do, not the way she wanted, not without blood spilled, but it's mostly a win, the question is, what's next?I really, really hope we get to see more of this amazing world and explore more of what is going on, because the setting is amazing, the art is cool, and I'm not really ready to leave this world just yet。   。。。more

The ending to Something is Killing the Children! Wow, what an ending!Erica Slaughter is one of my new heroes。 She's just a badass who does her own thing but for the greater good。 I do wish we could have seen the backstory as to how she got the octopus。。。 she mentions what happened but I kind of wish we could have seen the process for it, it might have connected a few more dots。I'm glad we also got to know more about the Slaughter House she came from more in this volume, and her backstory。As alwa The ending to Something is Killing the Children! This continues to be one of my favorite running comics。 This first arc wrapped up very well, and I hope we can keep following Erica Slaughter around the country as she beats up monsters。 Also a continued shout out to the excellent artwork by Werther Dell'edera。 This continues to be one of my favorite running comics。 This first arc wrapped up very well, and I hope we can keep following Erica Slaughter around the country as she beats up monsters。 Also a continued shout out to the excellent artwork by Werther Dell'edera。 。。。more

My expectations were a bit low going into this。 I have mixed feelings about Boom as a publisher, but they have done some long form series that I have really enjoyed (and some short form that were very much meh)。 This reviews is covering digital floppies 1-15。The high concept is Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a moderately depressed teen traveling into a small Midwestern town to hunt and kill monsters。This series is more than that。 None of the upbeat, snarky Buffy dialogue。 This is a teen trained by My expectations were a bit low going into this。 I have mixed feelings about Boom as a publisher, but they have done some long form series that I have really enjoyed (and some short form that were very much meh)。 This reviews is covering digital floppies 1-15。The high concept is Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a moderately depressed teen traveling into a small Midwestern town to hunt and kill monsters。This series is more than that。 None of the upbeat, snarky Buffy dialogue。 This is a teen trained by a secret society to hunt and kill monsters and not to leave any evidence behind。 Even if that means killing people who may not have been involved in summoning or aiding the monster。See where Erica, our erstwhile monster slayer has some problems? I mean come on unless people were oblivious in Sunnydale they knew what was going on。 Erica is not to leave any evidence behind, and the dead bodies were beginning to pile up even before she got to town。 Erica's conflicts are internal and external which is what raises this series above a cliche。 。。。more
